While I try to cover news related to new phones and apps on my blog, I come across a random topic that makes me think about the why behind it. Today, it struck my mind whether smartphone or tablet users really look at the ratings of an app while installing it. Lets just take a look at the facts.

Last time I installed an app on my smartphone I really did not look at the ratings and had it installed on my device. Then I was thinking why I did that, I gave it a thought and came to the conclusion that I installed that app because a friend asked me to do it. I really did not bother about installing that app or checking its ratings because I knew that specific app (Viber messaging app) is one of the popular messaging and calling app. Other such apps that I have installed because of their reputation are Foursquare and Pinterest.

Then I was thinking about any other random app which I have installed on my smartphone and I saw this mobile slots app and started thinking about the reason installing it. I came across that app while I was exploring the App Store looking for any new game that I never saw before. I found that app, read the description and then finally thought that I would install this app if the ratings are good and I saw good ratings and had it installed on my smartphone.

Later I started looking among the installed apps an app that I have installed for a specific purpose. When one of my sisters was about to get married I thought of gifting her a collage that will have photos of all the siblings. So I started looking for an app to make a collage, I found several free apps for the purpose but most of them are including the app name within the collage but one turned out to be fit for the purpose, the PicsArt app. While looking for an app that will do a specific task, I installed several number of apps and finally had one that was fit for that purpose. I didn’t check the ratings while exploring the apps, all I did was read the description and check if that app does what I wanted to do. Therefore, a number of apps had to be tried before I found the ideal one. Another app I installed to achieve specific tasks is RedLaser for scanning QR codes.

So, I came across the fact that when I explore new apps, only then I look at the ratings for the app, but when it was about popular apps, I don’t even bother about ratings or description I just install them. And while looking for an app for a specific task, I only read the description and install the app, though I think it would sensible to check the ratings also.

Do you check the ratings and reviews before installing an app on your smartphone or tablet? Let us know your views in comments below.
