Here we are with another App Review, this time of a great app that allows you to read your daily newspaper in much of a traditional way. We are talking about PressReader for Android, by NewspaperDirect where you can find more that 2,300 full-content newspapers and magazines from around the world. Not only you can read newspapers or magazines in English, the app also offers some of the regional newspapers in 55 languages. PressReader is also available for iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry PlayBook, Windows Phone, Windows 7 Slate PC and for Android Honeycomb tablets too.

On the very first use, the app downloads some additional data, so you will have to be patient for a while, it takes longer on a 2G network, so it is recommended that you connect to WiFi while using the app. On the first run the app asks whether you want to activate a trial or want to authorize your subscription. Activating the trial gives you a trial period of only 24 hours during which you can try out the app. If you want to get a subscription, you can hit the Join Now button on top of the interface and register yourself to get subscribed, or if you have already subscribed then head over to the Settings > Accounts > Authorize and enter your subscription email and password.

The app allows you to add favorites and also download latest issues of newspapers automatically in the background, while this option is enabled the app downloads new issues as soon as they are published. To avoid downloading using your carrier data you can set the app to download new issues only when connected to WiFi. Not only you can view new issues, but can also download the older issues by going into Sources, select country and the newspaper, then in the calendar that appears, select the date and tap OK, it downloads the issue for that particular date. But if you want to download issues for a range of dates, then you will have to select each day individually, you can not select multiple issues of a newspaper.

There is an option in the Settings menu that allows you to keep all the downloaded issues to remain in your device for anytime access, until you delete them manually. The issues that are currently downloading can also be paused and then resumed later, which continues the download right from where it was paused.
Now let’s talk about the reader interface, when you open any specific newspaper issue, the reader interface opens which hides the notification bar giving you more reading space. The reader interface gives you exactly the same view of the issue that you will find on the newspaper. The standard two-finger gestures work for zooming in and out to read a particular item, scrolling left or right switches to the next or previous page. The bar at the bottom of the reader interface allows you quick access to any particular section or page of the issue.

Reading in both portrait and landscape mode feels really comfortable on large screen phones, but on a smaller screen with less than 3.5-inches, landscape mode seems more comfortable. In some of the older devices that do not have multi-touch feature, like the Samsung Galaxy 5 GT-I5503, you will feel a bit difficult while reading because the two-finger zoom-in/zoom-out won’t work. Although, you can tap any headline which opens a particular article/news item separately.
Tap and Hold any headline gives you options to support/oppose an item, listen to the article or share that article. Sharing feature allows you to share any particular item on Twitter, Facebook or send it to a friend as an email. Listen feature allows you to listen to any news item if you do not prefer reading. The Listen feature works really fine and uses the Text-to-speech engine of your Android phone to deliver audio of the news items and articles. Minimizing the app pauses the audio and is resumed when you restore the app, so you can not do any other task while listening to the news item.

Overall, the app is perfect for those avid news readers and for those who always want to be updated on what’s going around the world. The app is available for free on all the platforms and you will have to buy a subscription in order to get new issues delivered to your phone. You can also get a per download subscription plan for $0.99 only where you will have to pay for every single download. You can get more details or buy subscription plans at www.PressReader.com.
We’d give PressReader a rating of 8.5 out of 10 and would recommend it our readers.
